Sun Hat | Easy Crochet Pattern

My first sun hat \(^ ^)/ I have been wearing this hat pretty much every day. Its great for gardening and wearing outdoors. I kept this pattern very basic and decided to make the brim straight rather than floppy as I originally intended.

Yarn: cotton yarn; approx. 120 ydscsh0

[Lily Sugars N Cream in Marble Print]

Hook: Size I / US 9 (5.5 mm)

Size G/ US 6 (4.0 mm)

Materials: stitch marker

scissors & tapestry needle

Gauge: 10 sts & 16 rows = 4 inches

Measurements:

Length (hat) – 6 inches

Circumference (hat) – 20 inches

Length (brim) – 3 inches

Circumference (brim) – 37 inches

Pattern:

Begin w/ adjustable loop & ch 1 OR ch 4 & sl st to join

Round 1: 12 sc in loop & sl st to join.

Round 2: *2 sc in first st; 1 sc in next st* (18 st)

Place stitch marker & work in a continual round.

Round 3: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts* (24 st)

Round 4: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts* (30 st)

Round 5: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 4 sts* (36 st)

Round 6: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 5 st* (42 st)

Round 7: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 6 st* (48 st)

*If making a larger size or using different materials & need to work additional increase rounds they would look a follows [2 sc in first st, sc in next 7 st] (54 st)… [2 sc in first st, sc in next 8 st] (60 st)… and so on…

Rounds 8-23: sc in ea st

Continue until you have the correct length to cover your head & before you reach the eye level. (This may be a bit shorter than a normal hat since you do not want the brim to come down past your eyes.)

Round 24: sc in the front loop only

*Optional: Switch to smaller size hook [G/US 6 (4.0 mm)]

Round 25: *2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st* (72 sts)

Round 26: sc in ea st

Round 27: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts* (96 sts)

Rounds 28-29: sc in ea st

Round 30: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts* (120 sts)

Rounds 31-33: sc in ea st

Round 34: *2 sc in first st, sc in next 4 sts* (144 sts)

Rounds 35-36: sc in ea st

Continue until the brim is your desired size.

*If you are making a larger brim than mine and need to work additional increase rounds they would look as follows [2 sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts] (168 sts)… [2 sc in first st, sc in next 6 st]… and so on…

sl st to join & fasten in  your ends.

Pattern Notes:  You can make the brim of your hat any length you prefer. Add additional increase rounds if necessary.  You can crochet a wire into the brim of your hat to give it structure and make it stand out on its own.  Switching to a smaller size hook is optional.  I prefer the brim of the hat to have tighter stitches to give it better structure.

    1. I am trying your pattern. My rim is ruffling. I have followed the patten exactly. Do you know what is causing it? I have taken it out and done it twice. Using the same brand of cotton yarn even.

  2. Love the pattern. I followed it exactly as it said and mind came out more like a floppy hat. Not sure why, but I love it just the same.
