Slouchy Beanie | Easy Crochet Pattern

This is my first slouchy beanie.  I know that they have become very popular recently and I never understood their purpose  – however, I absolutely love the look of this beanie. Its very comfortable and I love that I can tuck all of my hair up into the hat.  This pattern is very simple and be sure to adjust for your desired preference of ‘slouch.’

csb0Yarn: medium worsted weight; approx. 100 yds

[Red Heart Super Saver in Tea Leaf]

Hook: Size I / US 9 (5.5 mm)

Materials: stitch marker

scissors & tapestry needle

Gauge:

12 sts & 8 rows = 4 inches

Measurements:

Length- 8 inches

Circumference- 22 inches

Pattern:

Begin w/ adjustable loop & ch 1 to secure OR ch 4 & sl st to join.

Round 1: 12 hdc in to loop & sl st to join.

Round 2: 2 hdc in ea st (24 st)

Place a stitch marker & work in a continual round for the following rounds.

Round 3: *2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next* (36 st)

Round 4: *2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 2 st* (48 st)

Round 5: *2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 3 st* (60 st)

*Optional: Depending on your materials and the size you are creating you may need to work additional increase rounds. These rounds would looks as follows [2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 4 st] (72 st)…. [2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 5 st] (84 st)…. and so on…

Rounds 6-16: 1 hdc in ea st

Continue crocheting until you have enough rounds for your desired slouchiness.  The more rounds you crochet the more slouchy your hat will become.

Round 17: *hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 3 st* (48 st)

If you worked additional rounds of increase then you will need to crochet the corresponding rounds to decrease your stitch count back to 48 stitches. [hdc2tog, hdc in next 5 st] (72 st)… [hdc2tog, hdc in next 4 st] (60 st)

Rounds 18-20: sc in ea st

sl st to join & sew in ends.

Pattern Notes:  You can crochet as many rounds of sc as needed to achieve the desired thickness for the band of your hat. Crochet as many rounds of hdc as needed to achieve your desired slouch for your hat.  Be sure to adjust the number of stitches used in your pattern based on your materials and the size hat that you are creating.

I consider the beanie that I made to be ‘slightly slouchy’ so be sure to change the pattern to create the beanie that you are looking for.  As I mentioned this pattern can be changed to create many different styles.  I made a slouchy beanie in a mens size and I needed 72 stitches in order to get the right slouch!  It also depends on the materials you use – Feel free to leave me any questions below!

This beanie was inspired by an image that I saw on Pinterest and I did my best to embroider a tree on my beanie as well!

  1. Please help me. I need to make this hat fir a smaller man. I do not think he has a large head. Will your pattern work? You mentioned something about changing count. Can you please give me an idea. Much appreciated. I love your tutorial and the way you explain things. But, after many afghans and scarfs… this is my first hat.
